Pavor Nocturnus Occurs in Adults

Pavor nocturnus Pavor nocturnus is another name for night terror. Theses terrors are known as parasomnia disorders because a person is locked momentarily into a stressful situation without being able to awake. This is different from a nightmare because the victim is not fully asleep when it occurs and doesn't dream or experience any specific situation except general terror. Adults normally don't have night terrors but they can occur when they are afraid to go to sleep. A situation that might cause this kind of fear is a home invasion or home burglary that occurred during the night. The adult then no longer feels safe to fall asleep and may experience this kind of constant fear that interrupts their sleep patterns.

Sleepwalking People

sleepwalkingSleepwalking people are not necessary unconscious. They, in fact, are not even completely asleep. So the idea that they are reacting to a dream is false. The episode happens before deep sleep or REM; rapid eye movement. Sleepwalking happens to people that have high levels of stress or anxiety. Their body shuts down and their level of memory basically works less. So they may be awake but they won’t remember doing the things they perform during the stage of going to sleep. There has been some link to genetics between sleepwalkers and age has a factor; growth with age has been known to minimize the episodes.

Taking a Hypnic Jerk to Bed

hypnic jerkHave you ever waked up during sleep because your body jerked suddenly? Or have you tried to fight your tired sleepiness then jerk back to attention? I do it several nights each week when I'm trying to fight sleep. Sometimes I think I'll form a bad sleep habit because I try to fight it so often. Yet this sensation is documented and more than the majority of people have experienced it. Some explain a hypnic jerk as a falling sensation and may actually think they are dreaming of falling but it is just a hallucination.

A Night Terror is an Immature Sleep Pattern

night terrorNight terrors are known to affect children between the ages of four to twelve. A night terror is not the same as a nightmare and is often considered to create immature sleep patterns. They occur only during stage 4 of sleep, slow brain-wave sleep, and a child will actually sit-up with eyes open and still be unconscious. After the episode most victims of this sleeping disorder do not remember any part of the disrupted behavior. Night terrors ail boys more than they do girls and the sleeping disorder is often outgrown before the end of adolescence.
